Shockwave is a group of people who attend Science-Fiction/Fantasy conventions in the Northwest that decided that the parties at these conventions were either lacking or too commercial.  By commercial, we mean that they were advertising one group or other, or they were promoting a particular convention or bid for a city for the next convention.  These parties were usually a well lit room with someone's boom box playing a mellow hit.  These types of parties were great for socializing, but not the atmosphere that most of us think about when we say "party".

This group wanted loud music, darkness, and good drink.

So, about 1995, Shockwave - A Decker Bar - was born.

After a couple of years, Shockwave has grown to a core group of about six members.  At an average convention, you will find one to three DJ's - taking no less than 2 hour shifts, a couple of people alternating as bartenders, and a couple acting as doormen (ID checks - Shockwave is 21 and over at this time) and floats.  Each position has a title that reflects the Cyberpunk theme of the party.  DJ's are Deck Jockeys, Bartenders are Alchemists, and security and floats are Diplomats.  Even though each person has a title that reflects their main duties, everybody tends to work each position as needed.

The group responsible for Shockwave subscribes wholeheartedly to the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid).  This means that instead of having a full bar, we serve 1 type of drink - Purple Stuff - a grapeish alcoholic drink that we concocted in a drunken stupor.  On an average, we go through about 30 gallons over two nights. The bar also serves Atomic Cherries - Maraschino cherries soaked in alcohol.  The party boasts 2200+ watts of DJ equipment, 80,000+ songs, and a hand painted, black light reflective, 14 foot by 14 foot dance floor.  The only lighting in the room is black light, which is enough to allow most to see, but still keep a dark ambiance in the room.
